The spread of coronavirus in Australia is not the fault of individuals but a result of neoliberalism

Image
Neoliberalism is spreading coronavirus faster than any “reckless teenager” ever could. Privatised guards at quarantine hotels, private aged care centres that put profits ahead of staffing levels, and the fact that those in charge neglected to have their health professionals appropriately evaluate the risk of the Ruby Princess, are the major causes of Covid-19 transmissions and deaths in Australia. Coronavirus in Australia: State border closures due to face PM scrutiny

Image
Scott Morrison will urge the states to “get practical” about border closures at the National Cabinet on Friday amid growing complaints of families being refused medical treatment and denied the right to travel interstate to relocate for new jobs. After finalising a road map for borders to reopen earlier this year in July, the plan went out the window after coronavirus cases spiked in Victoria. At Friday’s talks between state premiers and the Prime Minister, the federal government will urge leaders to stick to the medical advice and resist the politics. “Well we’ve got to be practical about these things, and we’ve got to act on medical advice and that has to be transparent,’’ the Prime Minister said this week. Australian television a whitewash as Anglo-Celtic presenters dominate newsrooms

Image
Australian society is a mosaic of the world’s cultures, with almost half of the nation either born overseas or with a parent born overseas and more than 300 languages spoken. But you wouldn’t get that impression watching Australian television, according to findings released by Media Diversity Australia. Its report, Who Gets to Tell Australian Stories?, released on Monday, shows that free-to-air networks are disproportionately white compared with the wider Australian population – 76% of presenters, commentators and reporters on free-to-air networks are Anglo-Celtic despite making up only 58% of the population. Non-European and Indigenous Australians, who combined form 24% of the population, made up only 11% of free-to-air news personalities – a figure inflated by the inclusion of SBS in the report.
