Australia fires: NSW towns cut off by bushfire as Queensland residents told to leave

Residents face a nervous wait on Monday night as gusty, strong winds whip-up a blaze in the New South Wales Shoalhaven area which remains at emergency warning level.

The fire north of Batemans Bay has burnt through more than 16,000 hectares and was spreading quickly in a north-easterly direction towards coastal communities.

The Princes Highway was closed between Termeil and the Kings Highway turnoff, cutting access to coastal communities in the area.

The Rural Fire Service NSW warned those living in areas between Kioloa and North Durras, including Depot Beach, Pebbly Beach, Pretty Beach and Bawley Point, that it was too late to leave.

NSW and Qld fires: The Currowan bushfire north of Batemans Bay had burnt through more than 16,000 hectares by Monday afternoon due to strong winds.

Coronavirus Victoria: Intruder breaks into Intercontinental quarantine hotel in Melbourne CBD

 There has been another breach at a Melbourne quarantine hotel with a man able to break into the facility, but the agency in charge of the state’s quarantine system has shifted the blame to Victoria Police. Police are investigating after the attempted burglary at the Intercontinental Hotel on Collins Street on Saturday after a man was able to walk in without detection. With koala numbers in decline, one lobby group has drafted its own protection legislation

 Wildlife rescuer Tracey Wilson lets out a familiar refrain whenever she receives a call about a lost or injured koala: "Here we go again".  It is not from a lack of love for the iconic marsupial — Ms Wilson spends countless hours helping injured koalas recuperate from all sorts of injuries and mishaps. She was one of the first people on hand when 21 koalas were found dead and 49 so horribly injured they had to be euthanased after a south-west Victorian timber plantation was cleared in 2020. Many of the koalas that survived that incident recovered at Ms Wilson's wildlife sanctuary in Koroit. Her frustration, she said, stemmed from the fact that the number of calls to help injured koalas was increasing.
