Australia burns as government resists calls for climate action

Image
Australia's government is resisting growing calls for a more ambitous response to climate change, even as the country battles devastating bushfires triggered by record temperatures that have sent air pollution to critical levels. Hundreds of homes were confirmed lost last week as enormous bushfires burned in every state of the drought-stricken country as town after town endured new temperature highs. Australia recorded its hottest-ever day on Tuesday and again on Wednesday as the average temperature reached 41.9 degrees Celsius. The previous record was 40.3 degrees on January 3, 2013. Australia changed its historical carbon emissions data: what happened?

Image
Australia’s official greenhouse gas records have been adjusted such that emissions are now significantly higher than previously believed for the years when Labor was in power, and no longer rise each year since the Coalition repealed the carbon price. The revisions, made clear in data published during the recent UN climate conference in Madrid, have allowed Scott Morrison to start claiming that emissions are now lower than when the Coalition was elected in 2013 and in any year when Labor was last in government. Just 5% of Australian community services staff able to meet demand

Image
Just 5% of staff working in community services say they have enough capacity to meet demand, a survey commissioned by the Australian Council of Social Service (Acoss) has found. The survey of 1,464 staff including 406 organisational leaders, conducted in October this year found very few had the ability to completely meet the demand for services from the community. Those most likely to report unmet demand were in the housing and homelessness (38%) sector, financial counselling (35%) and legal services (33%). Those located in regional and rural areas had higher levels of unmet demand. Facebook tells users Islamophobic posts meet its community standards despite investigation

Image
Facebook is telling users that Islamophobic posts distributed through a clandestine network of far-right pages meet its “community standards”, despite revelations they are being used as part of a coordinated scheme profiting from hate and disinformation. The Guardian revealed on Friday that an Israel-based group had gained access to at least 21 far-right Facebook pages with vast followings across the western world. The 21 pages were used to coordinate the distribution of more than a thousand “news” posts each week to more than 1m followers, spreading disinformation and hate targeting Muslims, promoting far-right politicians and vilifying prominent Muslim politicians. Australian paedophiles pay as little as $15 for online abuse of children in Philippines

Image
Australian paedophiles are paying as little as A$15 for children to perform sexual acts online while being filmed in the Philippines, according to the head of the Australian federal police team in Manila. Senior officer Andrew Perkins told Guardian Australia there was an “alarming shift” from previously more common types of “sex tourism” to “convenient and low-risk” online abuse of children which can be customised to the specific requirements of customers. “It includes the development of live online sexual abuse in pay-per-view. Online child sexual exploitation is one of the most alarming forms of human trafficking in the Philippines,” Perkins said. . Religious discrimination bill: faith-based groups and equality advocates welcome delay

Image
Faith-based service providers and equality advocates have welcomed a government decision to delay new religious discrimination laws, saying the legislation has “overreached” its initial intention. On Saturday, the prime minister, Scott Morrison, announced the government needed more time to get the laws right, promising to release a revised draft of the Religious Discrimination Act before the end the year to take into account issues that have been raised during the consultation process. Religious groups have slammed the proposed laws as not doing enough to protect religious freedoms, while the former high court justice, Michael Kirby, has warned that the “unbalanced” law will see a rise in both religious intolerance and anti-religious hostility. Chinese students in Australia speak: 'Australia embraces all cultures while losing its own'

Image
Chinese students in Australia have been accused of trying to stifle freedom of speech on campus, of attacking pro-democracy protesters and of undermining the quality of education at our top universities which are increasingly dependent on the money they bring. They stand at the centre of many of our political debates as we navigate the increasing influence of China in our region, its attempts to infiltrate our politics and institutions, and Australia’s increasing economic dependence. In all this, the voices of individual Chinese students are rarely heard. Over the past 10 weeks Guardian Australia has interviewed Chinese students studying in Australia in an attempt to get at the humanity and the diversity behind the headlines. Poorer and regional Australian students lag behind richer peers, report finds

Image
Poorer Australian students are 18 months behind their better-off peers at school, a report by Deloitte has found. And regional students were on average eight months behind at school. If academic results could be improved by 50% for poorer and Aboriginal students, the economy could get a boost of more than $200bn over 50 years, the report released on Sunday said. However, although there were obvious benefits to improving education outcomes, there were no guidelines in place on how to achieve them, which meant more research and policy-making in education was needed. Australia fires: NSW towns cut off by bushfire as Queensland residents told to leave

Image
Residents face a nervous wait on Monday night as gusty, strong winds whip-up a blaze in the New South Wales Shoalhaven area which remains at emergency warning level. The fire north of Batemans Bay has burnt through more than 16,000 hectares and was spreading quickly in a north-easterly direction towards coastal communities. The Princes Highway was closed between Termeil and the Kings Highway turnoff, cutting access to coastal communities in the area. The Rural Fire Service NSW warned those living in areas between Kioloa and North Durras, including Depot Beach, Pebbly Beach, Pretty Beach and Bawley Point, that it was too late to leave.
