Image
A South Australian woman who was convicted of being a member of the Islamic State terrorist group has had her guilty verdict overturned on appeal. Zainab Abdirahman-Khalif, 25, was convicted of being a member of a terrorist group by a jury following a trial last year. But the verdict was set aside and she was acquitted by the chief justice, Chris Kourakis, and Justice Greg Parker in a supreme court majority decision on Thursday. Justice Patricia Kelly said she would have dismissed the appeal. Abdirahman-Khalif, who has spent more than two years behind bars, cried and hugged supporters after she was released from the dock. China hits back at Australia's foreign minister for highlighting human rights abuses

Image
Beijing has condemned comments from the Australian foreign minister arguing that China must be held accountable for its domestic human rights abuses, saying Marise Payne’s speech was “ill-informed” and damaging to already-strained relations between the countries. In a wide-ranging and forthright speech on Tuesday night, Payne singled out China over its human rights abuses, in particular the detention of the Australian writer Dr Yang Hengjun on espionage charges, and the detention of a million Uighurs in Xinjiang province. Sydney cloaked in 'hazardous' smoke as Australia bushfires rage

Image
Sydney residents coughed and spluttered their way around Australia's largest metropolis on Thursday, as a bank of smoke from rural bushfires enveloped the city, prompting health warnings. Smoke from out-of-control fires to the north of the city prompted health authorities to warn residents with respiratory problems to avoid outdoor physical activity. "If you really want to keep out of the smoke, the best thing you can do is stay indoors, keep your doors and windows shut," said Richard Broome of the New South Wales' Ministry of Health. Climate change poses a ‘direct threat’ to Australia’s national security. It must be a political priority

Image
It is evident from Australia’s increasingly severe droughts and record-breaking heatwaves that time is running out to take action on climate change. Yet, despite persistent calls from eminent scientists to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels, a call to action has gone unanswered by our political leaders. And we aren’t just facing an environmental threat alone in Australia – there are significant implications for our national security and defence capabilities that we haven’t fully reckoned with either. Gastro outbreak strikes more than 100 passengers on Sydney to Perth train

Image
A transcontinental Australian tourist train has seen more than 100 passengers in the past month contract gastro while travelling the 4,352km journey between Sydney and Perth. Authorities said at least two people from the Indian Pacific train had presented to hospital emergency departments with symptoms suspected to be the short-lived norovirus since the beginning of the outbreak in mid-September. “Norovirus is one of these agents that’s actually very hard to control once it’s in the environment,” said Louise Flood, director of South Australian Health’s communicable disease control branch (CDCB). Dealing with ‘problems without passports’: Australia–EU cooperation on counterterrorism

Image
In a recent public lecture, former Australian foreign minister and outgoing chancellor of the Australian National University Gareth Evans commented, ‘Geopolitically, Europe’s role matters enormously, again, in a world where principled voices are in short supply … and where multilateral approaches to problem solving—particularly on those … issues … which Kofi Annan used to describe as “problems without passports”—have never been more necessary’. While Evans cited climate change as the quintessential example, ‘problems without passports’ encompass all sorts of crises and challenges that transcend borders. The asymmetrical security threat posed by transnational terrorism is another case in point. Despite sustained multilateral efforts over the past 18 years, the threat from terrorist groups seems to be constantly evolving rather than abating. Initial hope that the destruction of Islamic State’s ‘caliphate’ in Iraq and Syria would also signal the demise of the movement was misplaced. ...

Australia’s First Published Dictionary Was Dedicated to ‘Convict Slang’

Image
Four men—Thomas Cheesman, John Drew, Michael Reardon, and John Webster—were apprehended on Bathurst Street for tossing halfpence coins from a wooden plank, and placing bets on which would land on heads and which on tails. They were “spinning the mags,” the arresting officer, one Constable Sutland, told those assembled in the courtroom later, according to the unusually detailed newspaper account. “What do you say?” asked Captain Rossi, understandably puzzled. “I don’t understand you.” Constable Sutland then explained, “in a manner truly impressive and edifying to both Bench and bye standers, and with much historical tact” that “spinning the mags, your worship, is slang for toss-half penny,” a more common name for the game of chance they were playing. The details of the crime sufficiently clear, the men were jailed for a week. Read more:  https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/thieves-cant-in-convict-era-australia

5 TIPS TO ASSESS THE MARKET POTENTIAL FOR A START-UP IDEA

Image
Hey People, One of my acquaintances started a digital gadgets retailing business which failed five years down the line, while another of my friend’s bookselling e-commerce business showed great profits in just a year. It was astonishing to witness the stark contrast, but it made one thing pretty clear to me that you need to understand the market potential of your idea. The bookseller friend did her research well and knew what she was getting into while the retailer person was a novice who thought that gadgets are the need of the hour. To understand this better, take a look at the informative article shared below about assessment of market potential. https://www.business2sell.com.au/blogs/evaluation/5-tips-to-assess-the-market-potential-for-a-startup-idea

US, UK and Australia urge Facebook to create backdoor access to encrypted messages

Image
The United States, United Kingdom and Australia plan to pressure Facebook to create a backdoor into its encrypted messaging apps that would allow governments to access the content of private communications, according to an open letter from top government officials to Mark Zuckerberg obtained by the Guardian. The open letter, dated 4 October, is jointly signed by the UK home secretary, Priti Patel; the US attorney general, William Barr; the US acting secretary of homeland security, Kevin McAleenan; and the Australian minister for home affairs, Peter Dutton, and is expected to be released Friday. Australia's ambassador to Washington rejects key claim by Lindsey Graham

Image
Australia’s ambassador in Washington has flatly rejected a description by the Senate judiciary committee chairman, Lindsey Graham, of Alexander Downer’s role in relaying information to US authorities about Russia obtaining damaging information about Hillary Clinton. Graham, an influential Republican senator, wrote to the prime ministers of Australia, Italy and the UK calling for their continued cooperation with the US attorney general William Barr’s investigation – a controversial probe established by Donald Trump aimed at discrediting the Mueller inquiry. Scott Morrison's 'negative globalism' no echo of Trump, Josh Frydenberg says

Image
Josh Frydenberg has denied suggestions Scott Morrison echoed Donald Trump’s rhetoric in a major speech criticising “negative globalism” and cited UN criticism of Australia’s asylum seeker policies as an example of international overreach. The treasurer and deputy Liberal leader made the comments on Friday, following Morrison’s speech to the Lowy Institute in which he declared sovereign nations needed to eschew an “unaccountable internationalist bureaucracy” and the world needs to avoid “negative globalism”. New 'iron dragon' pterosaur found in Australia

Image
ONE FALL DAY in 2017, Bob Elliott had just finished spraying for weeds on Australia’s Belmont ranch when he noticed something unusual poking through the silty ground: a handful of mottled brown bones. The ranch, which Elliott co-owns and manages, previously yielded remains of the long-necked dinosaurs known as sauropods. But in comparison to bones from those living skyscrapers, the newfound fossils were downright small. “He knew straightaway this was quite different ... and unlike anything that we’d seen before,” says Adele Pentland, a research associate with the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Natural History Museum in Winton, Queensland. Further study from Pentland and her colleagues confirmed that the fossil bones Elliott found came from a flying reptile known as a pterosaur—and that they represent the most complete set of pterosaur remains yet found in Australia.
