BOM issues severe weather warning ahead of bitterly cold polar low

Thursday, Friday and the weekend will be bitingly cold and dangerously windy for millions in the path of a massive winter storm headed north from the Bass Strait.

Forecasters have warned of “bitter” temperatures as the mercury plummets at a rate of knots.

Melbourne could sink to as low as 5C on the weekend, while if you head inland a low of zero is a real possibility even on lower ground. On higher ground, expect minimums of -8C and snow blizzards.

It’s not just Victoria — Tasmania, South Australia, the ACT and New South Wales will all see a slide in temperatures. Lows of -3C in Canberra; further north Sydney could see the highs drop from a spring like 23C to a wintry 16C on Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for Victoria ahead of a polar low set to smash into the southeast of Australia tomorrow and hang around until Monday next week.
