Australia’s unprecedented bush fire season has prompted plenty of debate among lawmakers in the capital, Canberra, with inquiries set to begin on how to prevent a recurrence in the future as climate change continues to ramp up fire danger in the country. However, now it’s Canberra itself that the fires are targeting. A heat wave and high winds are combining to create extreme fire danger through Sunday, potentially enabling a bush fire burning on the outskirts of the city of 400,000 to make a run at heavily populated areas. That fire is burning in Namadgi National Park and was accidentally started by a military helicopter used for firefighting. Australian researchers have been tasked with painting a clearer picture of the deadly new coronavirus, to pave the way for testing potential vaccines. Federal science agency the CSIRO have been asked by a global group that aims to derail epidemics to help determine the key characteristics of the virus. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) wants to know how long the virus takes to develop and replicate, how it impacts the respiratory system and how it's transmitted. The CSIRO is working with the Doherty Institute and the University of Queensland with the goal to develop a vaccine in a matter of weeks. Australia is among 21 nations where perceived corruption has worsened “significantly” over the past eight years, a new report says. Transparency International released its latest corruption perceptions index on Thursday, ranking levels of perceived corruption in governments across the world.
