South Australian woman's conviction for being a member of Isis overturned on appeal

A South Australian woman who was convicted of being a member of the Islamic State terrorist group has had her guilty verdict overturned on appeal. Zainab Abdirahman-Khalif, 25, was convicted of being a member of a terrorist group by a jury following a trial last year. But the verdict was set aside and she was acquitted by the chief justice, Chris Kourakis, and Justice Greg Parker in a supreme court majority decision on Thursday. Justice Patricia Kelly said she would have dismissed the appeal. Abdirahman-Khalif, who has spent more than two years behind bars, cried and hugged supporters after she was released from the dock. Australia police find 400kg drugs in hot sauce bottles

Authorities searched a consignment of sriracha chilli sauce shipped to Sydney from the US to discover drugs worth roughly A$300 million (£161m; $207m). They subsequently arrested four men aged 30, 34, 36 and 45 - the oldest of whom was detained on Thursday. Police are in touch with US authorities in a bid to find the shipment's origin. Beijing has condemned comments from the Australian foreign minister arguing that China must be held accountable for its domestic human rights abuses, saying Marise Payne’s speech was “ill-informed” and damaging to already-strained relations between the countries. In a wide-ranging and forthright speech on Tuesday night, Payne singled out China over its human rights abuses, in particular the detention of the Australian writer Dr Yang Hengjun on espionage charges, and the detention of a million Uighurs in Xinjiang province. Sydney cloaked in 'hazardous' smoke as Australia bushfires rage

Sydney residents coughed and spluttered their way around Australia's largest metropolis on Thursday, as a bank of smoke from rural bushfires enveloped the city, prompting health warnings. Smoke from out-of-control fires to the north of the city prompted health authorities to warn residents with respiratory problems to avoid outdoor physical activity.
