Mike Pompeo defends Australia from China threats

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has defended Australia while branding China as a brutal regime ideologically and politically hostile to free nations. Mr Pompeo has told reporters the world was "waking up" to China following its response to the COVID-19 outbreak and treatment of Australia, Vietnam and Malaysia. Australia led a successful push for a global inquiry into the pandemic and in recent days China slapped an 80 per cent tariff on Australian barley imports and is blocking red meat from four Australian abattoirs. WA chief health officer defends hard border closure Western Australia’s chief health officer, Dr Andrew Robertson, said border controls should remain in place until the eastern states get their community transmission rates down. “As Western Australia increases the size of mass gatherings in the hospitality, community and sports sectors in phases 2 and 3, the reintroduction of Covid-19 back into the community from travellers could lead to substantial outbreaks that may require either delay in easing of further restrictions or reintroduction of social distancing and mass gathering measures,” he said.
