‘You need a plan’: Heat, high winds may intensify bush fires advancing toward Australia’s capital

Image
Australia’s unprecedented bush fire season has prompted plenty of debate among lawmakers in the capital, Canberra, with inquiries set to begin on how to prevent a recurrence in the future as climate change continues to ramp up fire danger in the country. However, now it’s Canberra itself that the fires are targeting. A heat wave and high winds are combining to create extreme fire danger through Sunday, potentially enabling a bush fire burning on the outskirts of the city of 400,000 to make a run at heavily populated areas. That fire is burning in Namadgi National Park and was accidentally started by a military helicopter used for firefighting. According to Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Chief Minister Andrew Barr, officials expect the fire currently burning in the Orroral Valley to grow “significantly in size.” Read more:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/01/30/you-need-plan-heat-high-winds-may-intensify-bush-fires-advancing-toward-australias-capital/

PM's energy plan isn't really a plan – but it's a step in the right direction

Image
There are real conceptual and practical problems with the energy deal struck between the Morrison and Berejiklian governments which I’ll get to in a minute, but let’s start with the positive. Despite Scott Morrison presenting to voters as a squat brick wall on climate change, engaging in his usual passive aggressive misdirections and his “shut up down the back, Dad is talking” shtick, the good news is this bilateral agreement represents a watershed of sorts. Although the prime minister had to shout gas gas gas is GREAT (presumably to stop Matt Canavan moaning to the Courier Mail, or George Christensen threatening, then failing, to cross the floor because someone said renewable energy) Friday’s deal is two Coalition governments working together on a set of proposals that will, in time, deliver lower emissions in Australia. Federal science agency the CSIRO have been asked by a global group that aims to derail epidemics to help determine the key characteristics of the virus. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) wants to know how long the virus takes to develop and replicate, how it impacts the respiratory system and how it's transmitted. The CSIRO is working with the Doherty Institute and the University of Queensland with the goal to develop a vaccine in a matter of weeks. Australia's international benchmark price – Singapore Mogas – has dropped from US$77.5 a barrel to US$70.3 a barrel, the lowest in two-and-a-half months. What Could Cause Accounts Payable To Be Understated

Image
Hi All, I have always been in favour of hiring a professional for a challenging job like bookkeeping. However, when my small business was not a very profitable venture and we were barely reaching the break-even point, I used to do the accounting work myself. So when I checked the accounts a few times, I would always face the problem of understated accounts payable at the end of the year. It would be a tedious exercise to check everything again and get the correct figures. Thus every person running a business must be aware of the causes of understatement. So here is an article that sheds light on the topic. Read on.   https://www.agibookkeeping.com.au/cause-accounts-payable-understated/

Bushfire crisis expected to further sap confidence in the Australian economy

Image
Businesses damaged by bushfires will be eligible for additional grants of up to $50,000 in the latest pledge from the Morrison government’s $2bn disaster relief package. Businesses will also be able to access concessional loans of up to $500,000 if they have suffered significant loss of revenue or asset loss, opening the door to those indirectly affected by a business downturn rather than fire damage. The announcement on Monday responds to small business demands to boost cashflow after fires on the New South Wales south coast, in Victoria’s East Gippsland and on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island drove away tourists. Dust storms and golf ball-sized hail are battering southeastern Australia

Image
Parts of southeastern Australia are being pelted by hailstones the size of golf balls, big enough to smash car windows and injure birds, less than 24 hours after the region was hit by massive dust storms. The hailstorms arrived in the national capital Canberra on Monday afternoon, covering the ground with white balls of ice and leaves that have been stripped from trees. People ran for cover, and drivers pulled off the road to try and find underground parking for fear of hailstone damage. Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon leave New Zealand reeling after David Warner's hundred

Image
Australia need six wickets in the final session to wrap up a 3-0 series sweep of a bedraggled New Zealand after David Warner and Nathan Lyon dominated the visitors with bat and ball respectively on day four at the SCG. Set a notional 416 for victory, New Zealand were swiftly in trouble, losing Tom Blundell, Tom Latham, Jeet Raval and Glenn Phillips in quick succession on a wearing pitch to be 4 for 27 at tea, with a minimum 37 overs still to be bowled. Lyon, alternating sharp spin and straighter deliveries with plenty of bounce, grabbed a wicket in each of his first two overs after Mitchell Starc had claimed Blundell and Latham. Smoke in Australia's capital is so bad that the agency responsible for emergency management has shut

Image
The Australian federal government department responsible for managing emergencies shut its Canberra office due to poor air quality on Monday as the nation's capital choked on smoke from deadly bushfires. On Monday, Canberra had a rating over 340 on the Air Quality Index -- higher than Beijing's 170. The rating comes as Australia is ravaged by some of the worst wildfires seen in decades, with the massive blazes destroying homes, devastating wildlife, turning skies blood red, and leaving a total of 24 people dead nationwide. The Department of Home Affairs told staff to stay away from its Canberra headquarters, CNN affiliate SBS reported, while the Department of Health told staff not to work out of one of its locations. Childcare services in the city were also shut. Read more:  https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/06/australia/australia-fires-capital-intl-hnk/index.html

Paradise lost: residents flee Eden as Australia fires race towards them

“Sometimes I think, ‘Fuck it, just burn it all, the house and everything,’” she says. “It’s the waiting and the limbo, you just feel like anything has to be better.” When Guardian Australia spoke to Caban on Sunday, the 33-year-old was sheltered inside the safety of an unregistered bus-turned-refuge on the wharf in the coastal New South Wales town of Eden with her husband, Oliver Tratham-Webb, her three daughters Pearl, Aster and Aria, three dogs, a cat and several ducklings. Terrifying Images Show The Overwhelming Scale of Australia's Bushfires From Space

Image
Australia's raging bushfires are so bad that satellites thousands of miles above Earth can easily spot their flames and smoke from space. The fires likely started naturally, though experts think human-caused climate disruption has exacerbated hot, arid conditions that fuel the growth of such blazes. Current estimates suggest eastern Australia's bushfire crisis has scorched more than 14 million acres of land, killed about half a billion animals, and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Australian bushfire crisis: global figures and media react to 'climate emergency'

Image
Politicians and climate change activists around the globe have expressed horror at the unfolding Australian bushfire crisis, saying the devastation is an urgent reminder of the climate emergency. Former US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said the fires – which began during Australia’s hottest ever year – left no room to question the effects of climate change. “With Australia on fire and the Arctic in meltdown, it’s clear we’re in a climate emergency,” Clinton said, going on to detail her support for the Earthshot prize, described by Sir David Attenborough as “the most prestigious environment prize in history”. 2019 was Australia's hottest year on record – 1.5C above average temperature

Image
The year 2019 was the hottest on record for Australia with the temperature reaching 1.52C above the long-term average, data from the Bureau of Meteorology confirms. The year that delivered crippling drought, heatwaves, temperature records and devastating bushfires was 0.19C hotter than 2013, the previous record holder. Climate scientists told Guardian Australia that climate change pushed what would have been a hot year into record territory, driving heat extremes and the risk of deadly bushfires. WWII triggered creation of Australia's only underground hospital at Mount Isa

Image
As World War II inched closer to Australia, miners in Queensland's north-west volunteered their manpower to dig and fit out Australia's first — and only — underground hospital. Consisting of four tunnels, and only a stone's throw from Mount Isa's actual hospital, the underground structure was the town's back-up plan should it be bombed like Darwin. The threat was real, considering Mount Isa had its mine and plenty of valuable minerals nearby. Injury-ridden New Zealand seek revival against rampant Australia

Image
New Zealand's 247-run defeat in the Boxing Day Test marked their first Test series loss in more than two years. In Perth, they missed the services of Trent Boult, who has now been ruled out of the series, after having sustained a fracture to the second metacarpal of his right hand while batting in the Melbourne Test. To add to the misery, skipper Kane Williamson and batsman Henry Nicholls are known to have missed back-to-back training sessions with flu-like symptoms. Auckland batsman Glenn Phillips has been called up as cover for the duo. Read more:  https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/1559316
