Brad Scott’s golden handshake revealed in extraordinary $800,000 powerplay

Image
North Melbourne is reportedly staring down the barrel of an $800,000 payout to former coach Brad Scott next year if the unemployed mentor doesn’t take up a senior coaching role in 2020. According to an exclusive report in The Herald Sun, Scott has the Roos at his mercy knowing that he can’t lose even if he misses out on a job for the 2020 season. Scott’s decision to walk away from the Roos prompted widespread speculation the former Brisbane Lions star had already been in contact with St Kilda over the club’s vacant coaching position for next year following Alan Richardson’s departure. The night Victorian police raided the Tasty nightclub

Image
Just after midnight on Sunday, August 7, 1994 at Tasty nightclub, one of Melbourne’s most popular gay venues, the music suddenly stopped. As many as 40 police officers burst into the nightclub, shouting orders through a megaphone and shining torches in faces. Over several hours, hundreds of patrons were stripsearched, often in full view of each other. No one was permitted to leave while the raid was underway. Anyone who protested was charged with hindering a police operation. In the end, just two people were arrested for drug possession. Officially known as Operation Maze, the raid was widely considered an attack on Melbourne’s gay community under the pretence of a drug bust. Twenty five years on, it’s remembered as an important event for gay activists. Melbourne Catholic girls school Presentation College Windsor to close in 2020

Image
One of the oldest Catholic girls schools in Victoria has announced it will close at the end of next year, leaving students, parents and staff shocked. Presentation College Windsor (PCW), which was founded 146 years ago, has told the parents of about 700 girls enrolled at the school that it will shut its doors at the end of the 2020 school year. The congregational leader of Presentation Sisters Victoria, Sister Maria Lazzaro, told parents in a letter the "sad and difficult decision" had been made due to falling enrolment numbers. "Despite our best efforts to sustain and grow our learning environment, enrolments have continued to be a challenge for us," Sister Maria wrote. "Comprehensive reviews of the college in both 2002 and 2018 indicate that the number of students intending to enrol in the college in the next decade are unlikely to recover to the level needed to resource a successful Catholic secondary college in the 21st century." Rapid growth is widening Melbourne’s social and economic divide.

Image
Melbourne is growing faster than most cities of similar size in developed countries. Population growth averaged more than 2.5% a year between 2011 and 2018. Other international cities that are also known for their livability typically recorded slower population growth than Melbourne. For example, over the decade to 2016, Vienna grew about half as fast as Melbourne and Greater Vancouver about one-third slower. Vienna and Vancouver are also smaller cities than Melbourne.
